In one of the most stunning political upsets in recent history, Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor lost yesterday in a primary challenge. He was defeated by tea party backed economic professor David Brat. David Brat received 55.5% of the vote and Eric Cantor received 44.5% of the vote. Eric Cantor is the Majority Leader in the House of Representatives. He is ranked number two in the leadership of the House. In 2008 he was considered a possible Vice Presidential candidate for Senator John McCain. He also was considered a possible successor as Speaker of the House. Today Eric Cantor stated that he will step down from his leadership position in July. The question now comes down to who will succeed him for the number two spot in the House of Representatives.
